My very first Christmas as a young married couple is still in my memory. We had the most beautiful tree that we cut down ourselves. Thus beginning a tradition that has carried through to this day. Our first tree was covered in lights and held just one single rocking horse ornament. The Christmas shops had plenty of ornaments to choose from but I wanted the ornaments to create memories that we could talk about for years to come.
Decades later when I open the Christmas boxes I am overwhelmed with the joy that each piece brings.
In my mission to use what I have and not purchase items I do not need the only Christmas item I purchased this year was a tablecloth for $14.99. The plaid pattern was perfect to make pillows for the living room and a table runner for the holidays. I thought it was a big score!! If you look closely you will see three buttons on one of the pillows. Those buttons are just one memory that I have managed to keep for decades. My first trip to Europe as an 19 year old I purchased a hand knit sweater from a sweet lady at a market in Italy. I wore that sweater until it was only being held together by those 3 buttons. I saved the buttons thinking some day I would make use of them.
Two of my favourite spots to decorate would be the fireplace mantel and the staircase. They are both lined with evergreen boughs and embellished with a few of my glass candle sticks as well ornaments collected over the years. Each ornament has a story behind it which is the best part!
Christmas has made it's entrance to my home carrying along with it many fond memories. I do not regret having had only one ornament on our first tree. If I had given in to the holiday shopping pressure 40 years ago that single rocking horse would not have carried the same meaning over the years.
As you begin to dress your homes for the holidays I hope you are able to create memories of your own that will carry on for years to come.
